Father Joseph Panakkalody alias Jose Nirappil was born on 28 April 1964 as the fifth child of Mrs. Mariyakutty and Mr. Xavier Nirappil, in a hamlet called Arinchermala in Wayanad Dt. Northern Kerala. He has three brothers and five sisters. They were ten children, but, unfortunately his younger brother expired when he was just 20 years old due to kidney failure.
Fr. Jose completed his grade school education in a Government school at Kaniyambetta and his high school studies in the Government High School Panamaram in Wayanad District.
He joined the Capuchins in 1986 at Seraphic Minor Seminary Bharananganam where he had his pre-university studies from 1986-1989. His novitiate formation was at Muvattupuzha during 1990-91. After the novitiate and his religious profession he was promoted for studies in philosophy at the Calvary Philosophy College at Thrissur from 1991-1994. During the same time, he secured a Bachelors’ Degree in Philosophy. After a period of regency he did his theological studies partially in Andhra Pradesh and completed it in the St. Francis Theological College at Kottayam from 1995-1998. Both major seminaries are run by the Capuchins.
He was ordained priest on 19 November 1998 by His Excellency Mar Emmanuel Pothanamoozhy, the Bishop of the diocese of Mananthavady. After his priestly ordination he served a couple of months as an assistant parish priest in the Lourdes Cathedral in Thrissur Diocese under Mar Bosco Puthoor the then parish Priest.
Having completed his pastoral work in the Lourdes Cathedral he returned to Seraphic Seminary Bharananganam to be the vice-rector and a teacher there. He taught English in the minor seminary from 1999-2003. During the same period i.e., 2000-2001, he secured a Masters Degree in English (M. A. Eng. Lit) from the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
In 2003, he was sent for higher studies to the United States, where from the Catholic University of America he secured a Masters Degree in Canon Law (Licentiate in Canon Law). In 2006, he returned home after his studies and joined the minor seminary at Sulthan Bathery to be the vice-rector and professor there.
However, in 2008 at the request of the Bishop of the Diocese of Balthangady he was sent to that diocese to be the pastor of two parishes. He worked there up to 2010.
Father Jose joined the Vicariate on 30 May 2011. He is assigned to the Parish of Our Lady of Arabia.
On 13th August 2012, Father Jose was appointed as Defender of the Bond of the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Bombay (see below).
